Movers in Portland, OR for Every Neighborhood

Priority Moving Services moves apartments, homes, and offices across Portland from our Hillsboro base at 560 SE 4th Avenue. We have been moving Portland-area families since 2006, with more than 17,000 moves completed, and every mover is a background-checked employee covered by workers' comp. Moves are billed by the hour, and a free quote gives you an estimate based on your home.

Portland moves change a lot from one side of the river to the other. Downtown and Pearl District buildings run on elevator reservations and loading docks, east side craftsman homes mean porch steps and street parking, and West Hills streets leave little room for a full-size truck. We also handle office moves in downtown Portland. Use the neighborhood guide, parking planner, and high-rise checklist below to see what your move involves.

Here is what you can expect with your move:

  • Hourly pricing and a free quote
  • Background-checked employee movers
  • Furniture padded and wrapped
  • Full or partial packing available
  • Climate-controlled storage in Hillsboro

From Pearl District High-Rises to Southeast Craftsman Homes

Portland housing ranges from Pearl District and South Waterfront towers to century-old craftsman homes in Southeast neighborhoods like Hawthorne and Sunnyside, and each one moves differently. A high-rise move depends on elevator reservations, loading docks, and building move windows. An older craftsman home often means narrow original stairwells, porch steps, and street parking out front. Our movers plan for both, along with office moves in downtown Portland, so the plan is set before the truck arrives.

Portland Neighborhood Moving Guide

Every part of Portland moves a little differently. Pick your area to see what your move usually involves and what to plan before moving day.

Downtown and the Pearl District

Downtown, Pearl District, Old Town

What your move usually involves

  • High-rise and mid-rise buildings with set move days, move hours, and elevator reservations
  • A loading dock, or a reserved curb space in a metered parking area
  • A certificate of insurance (COI) that the building requires from your movers

Plan ahead

On metered blocks, PBOT staff post the parking reservation signs for you. Allow 5 to 7 business days from application to your move date. The apartment and high-rise checklist below covers the building side.

Northwest Portland

Nob Hill, Alphabet District, Slabtown

What your move usually involves

  • Older apartment buildings, many of them walk-ups without an elevator
  • Victorian and early 1900s homes with front steps and narrow interior stairs
  • Dense street parking, so the truck may not fit near the door without a reservation

Plan ahead

Tell us about stairs and walk-up floors when you book so we send the right number of movers. Moving out past the West Hills? See our Cedar Hills movers page.

North Portland

St. Johns, Kenton, Arbor Lodge, Boise, Mississippi

What your move usually involves

  • A mix of older bungalows on residential streets and newer apartment buildings along corridors like N Williams and N Mississippi
  • Newer buildings with their own move rules, elevator bookings, and garage or courtyard access
  • Busy commercial streets where curb space fills early

Plan ahead

Ask your building manager for move rules as soon as you sign the lease. Heading across the Columbia River? Our Vancouver, WA movers handle moves on the Washington side.

Northeast Portland

Irvington, Alberta Arts, Grant Park, Hollywood, Rose City Park

What your move usually involves

  • Older homes with porch steps, and many with basements or finished attics
  • Historic homes in areas like Irvington, where doorways and stairwells can be tight for large furniture
  • Tree-lined residential streets where the truck parks at the curb

Plan ahead

Measure your largest pieces against doorways and stair turns at both homes. Moving farther east? See our Gresham movers page.

Southeast Portland

Hawthorne, Sunnyside, Laurelhurst, Richmond, Brooklyn, Sellwood-Moreland

What your move usually involves

  • Century-old craftsman homes with narrow original stairwells and basement access
  • Busy commercial streets like Hawthorne and Division next to quiet residential blocks
  • Street parking that may need a reservation on popular blocks

Plan ahead

Let us know about basement and attic items when you book, since they add carrying time. Our packing services can handle a full house if time is short.

Southwest Portland

West Hills, Goose Hollow, Hillsdale, Multnomah Village

What your move usually involves

  • Steep, winding, and sometimes narrow streets with limited room for a full-size truck
  • Sloped driveways and long walks between the truck and the front door
  • On streets narrower than 28 feet, PBOT may require reserving parking on both sides to keep the travel lane clear

Plan ahead

Describe your street and driveway when you book so we can plan truck placement. Moving south or west? See our Lake Oswego movers and Beaverton movers pages.

South Portland

South Waterfront, Collins View, Riverdale

What your move usually involves

  • High-rise condo and apartment towers in South Waterfront with elevator and loading dock rules
  • Addresses that changed from SW to S on May 1, 2020, when Portland created South Portland as its sixth address area
  • Hillside homes toward Collins View with the same steep-street planning as Southwest

Plan ahead

Give your movers the current S address, not an old SW address with a leading zero, so navigation goes to the right building.

Portland Moving Truck Parking Planner

If the moving truck will park on a public street in Portland, you can reserve the curb space with a Temporary Street Use Permit from the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT). Enter your move details to see when to apply, what the city charges, and who posts the signs.

City fees are estimates based on PBOT's published rates and do not include our moving costs. Your final permit fee depends on your address, curb length, and dates.

  • From November 19, 2026 through January 5, 2027, PBOT restricts street use in major retail districts for the holiday season. A similar restriction applies around the Rose Festival each spring.
  • The permit covers moving trucks, trailers, and storage containers, not passenger cars or SUVs.

Portland Moving FAQs

How much do movers in Portland, OR cost?

Portland moves are charged by the hour. The total depends on your home size, how much you are moving, the number of movers and trucks, and access at both addresses, such as stairs, elevators, and how close the truck can park. Request a free quote for an estimate based on your move.

Do I need a parking permit for a moving truck in Portland?

If the truck will park on a public street, you can reserve the curb space with a Temporary Street Use Permit from the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT). PBOT recommends allowing 5 to 7 business days from application to your permit start date. Use the parking planner on this page to estimate timing and city fees.

How far in advance should I book movers in Portland?

Book 2 to 4 weeks ahead, and earlier for summer and end-of-month dates. If your truck needs a street parking reservation, apply for the PBOT permit at least 5 to 7 business days before moving day.

Do you move apartments and high-rise condos in Portland?

Yes. We move apartments and condos across Portland, including buildings downtown, in the Pearl District, and in South Waterfront. Reserve the elevator and loading dock early, and ask your building what certificate of insurance it needs from your movers.

Which Portland neighborhoods do you serve?

We serve all of Portland, including North, Northeast, Southeast, Southwest, Northwest, South Portland, and downtown. We also move households in nearby cities such as Beaverton, Lake Oswego, Tigard, Gresham, and Vancouver, WA.

Can you move a piano in Portland?

Yes. We move upright, baby grand, grand, and children's pianos, either as part of a household move or as a piano-only move. See our piano moving page for how we prepare.

Do you handle office and commercial moves in Portland?

Yes. Our commercial movers relocate offices and businesses in downtown Portland and across the metro, with planning aimed at keeping downtime short.

Can I hire movers only to load a truck or storage container?

Yes. Our labor-only service covers loading or unloading a rental truck, POD, or other container that you drive yourself.

Are your movers insured?

We provide basic coverage based on item weight, and you can upgrade to full-value protection, even on moving day. All of our movers are employees covered by workers' comp, so you are not liable for on-site injuries. We recommend carrying irreplaceable or high-value items yourself.

What items won't you move?

We do not move pets, house plants, flammables, or liquids. Lawn mowers are fine once the gas is drained, and grills are fine with the propane disconnected. Pool tables must be slate-crated and prepped before the move.
