Electronics Moving Questions
Do movers pack and move computers?
Yes. Professional packers can box desktop towers, monitors, and printers with the right padding and load them on the truck. Most movers ask you to back up your data first and to carry laptops and backup drives yourself.
Is it safe to move a desktop computer with the graphics card installed?
Smaller cards are usually fine when the tower is packed upright and well padded. Large, heavy cards without a support bracket put strain on the slot, so remove them, bag them in anti-static bags, and pack them separately.
Should I remove the hard drive before moving?
For a normal desktop, no, as long as the data is backed up and the tower is padded. For a home server or NAS, yes. Remove the drives, label each one with its bay number, and carry them with you.
How do I keep track of which cable goes where?
Photograph the back of each device before you unplug it, then bag the cables by device and write the device name on the bag. Colored tape or numbered labels on each cable end make setup even faster.
Can I pack electronics in plastic bins?
Plastic bins work for cables, keyboards, and small accessories. Screens, towers, and printers are safer in snug cardboard boxes with padding, because loose items can slide and crack inside a hard bin.
How early should I start packing electronics?
Pack the devices you use least, like spare monitors, consoles, and speakers, about a week before the move. Pack your main computer, router, and modem last, the day before or the morning of the move.
