Congratulations to wrapping up another college semester!
Unfortunately, you don’t have a lot of time to move out of the dormitory. It is also bittersweet to say goodbye to your friends.
Don’t leave all of the hard work for your parents. Here are 5 tips for moving out of the college dorms.
1. Rent a Storage Unit
If you plan to return to school or if you are in a period of transition after graduation, storage is a great solution to keeping your belongings in a secure location.
We offer both large and small units in our 4,000 square feet warehouse in Hillsboro, with options to store for a short-term or long-term basis. Learn more about our storage services.
If you don’t feel like you will fully take advantage of one storage unit, you could always share the space with a sibling or trusted friend.
2. Out with the Old
Evaluate all of the items you purchased for the semester and consider selling them or tossing them out.
Old textbooks could be sold to the bookstore, but you might not get your money’s worth. Join or create a Facebook group for selling textbooks to other students who could use the same materials for the next term. You could also sell them on Amazon, eBay, Craigslist or at Powell’s Books.
Unused or worn out clothes can be exchanged at thrift stores or donated to a nonprofit organization. Read for more tips on how to downsize your belongings.
3. Residence Hall Move Out Procedures
Like any rental situation, college dorms have move-out protocols that you must follow.
Talk to your resident advisor about renting a vacuum. Clorox wipes, rubber gloves, and toilet bowl cleaner are essential cleaning supplies that you can snag for less than $10.
4. Hold the Elevator
If you live above the first floor, most likely you and everybody else who is moving out will need to use a dolly to transport heavy items down the elevator.
Rent a dolly from your resident advisor before your check out to avoid excessive wait times to use the elevator.
5. Plan Your College Move Out in Advance
Procrastination is practically second nature by the end of the semester, with exams taking up all of your time left.
So while you are taking breaks in between study hours and finals, take one small action to cleaning, purging, and packing your room. Start with clothing that you won’t use before the end of the term. Then work your way to electronics, posters, and so on.
