Bad weather – rain, sleet, snow, harsh winds – for most fellow Oregonians is simply weather. However, most people are not prepared for changes in weather conditions on moving day.
Whether you are moving across the country or across town, here are tips for staying warm and dry in bad weather.
Wear Plenty of Layers
In the winter, layers are your best friend on moving day. You want to stay warm, but a large, bulky jacket will likely get in your way and impede your ability to reach for items. Cover your head and ears, too, with a ball cap, beanie or knit hat that does not have a brim.

Sturdy Shoes for a Hard Winter
No matter the weather, you do need to pay close attention to your footwear. When you are moving a large, heavy sofa, the last thing you need is for your shoe to slip. If the weather is snowy, icy, or even rainy, this is even more of a concern. In those more inclement conditions, you will likely want to wear

In those more inclement conditions, you will likely want to wear boots or shoes that have a sturdy sole and knobby grips. If it’s cold, make sure you have good, thick socks to protect your feet.
Take note of your laces, too. If they are long and flopping to the ground, tuck them into the shoe or somehow ensure that they won’t get in the way. When you are walking backward the last thing you want to have happen is to trip on your own shoes. These things happen to the best of us, so please exercise an ounce of prevention.
Safety First
If it’s raining out, put practicality and safety above fashion or even staying dry.
Do wear a light rain shell over your layers to keep the rain off, but also consider a wide-brimmed, water-repellant hat.
While a brim might work against you, a heavy rain can get in your eyes and then you’re operating blind while trying to carry your family’s prized antiques. Remember: you can always dry off, so make sure your top priority is with safely carrying your items from your house to the truck – or vice versa.
